I would like to give a similar pshat in Refidim for the oilam... we know the attack of Amalek on Bnei Yisrael occurred in a place called Refidim, and our Rabbis teach us that this location was so named because while Bnei Yisrael were there, “Rafu Yedehem Min Ha’Torah” – they became lax in their engagement in Torah study. So the pasuk the rabbi quoted can be explained that once you reach Refidim, when you reach a point where your learning is not shtark automatically the next stop is Kivros Hatayva.
